Building a Better Balm

A few years back, a dear friend of ours was diagnosed with, and subsequently died of, prostate cancer. This was quite a shock as he was only in his mid-forties and seemed quite healthy. Since that time, we've done a fair amount of soul searching and personal research to find out what it all meant and tried to find ways to avoid a similar fate. In addition, we've since had kids and have became a lot more conscious of what we put in and on our bodies.

One thing that kept popping up in our research was the prevalence of, and the potential dangers of chemicals like parabens in cosmetics, foods, etc. We started reading labels and were quickly amazed at how ubiquitous they are. Naturally, we checked out the skin lubricant labels as well. Surprise, there they were. But this was different somehow. With soaps and shampoos for instance, one would use the product briefly then rinse it off, so the exposure is minimized. But think about it, with chamois cremes and skin lubricants, you might be sitting on them, heck, literally rubbing them in to sensitive areas of your body for 3, 6, 12 hours at a time or more. Combine that with daily training and you've got a whopping amount of continuous exposure.

In light of this information, we searched for similar products that were made without parabens or other ingredients that appear on one of the many "Dirty Dozen" lists of potentially hazardous chemicals. We were hard pressed to find any and decided to set out and try to build a better balm.

We started out by insisting on using the best natural ingredients available. Things like nourishing vitamins, soothing botanicals and plant-derived lubricants. As important as the ingredients were, It had to work! And work it does! We're very happy to report that Beljum Budder has been tried, tested and enthusiastically approved by riders in some of the toughest ultra-endurance races around.
